Farm plastics collection scheme agrees to supply plastics for conversion to liquid fuels
The Farm Plastics Collection and Recovery Scheme has reached agreement with Cynar plc to supply waste silage sheeting and wrap for conversion to liquid fuels. Commenting on today’s signing of a contract between Irish Farm Films Producers Group Ltd, the operators of the collection scheme, and Cynar at the Irish Farm Centre, Michael Slattery, Chairman of the Scheme, said:
“Since taking up responsibility for the operation of the farm plastics collection scheme in December 2003, IFFPG Ltd. has vigorously examined all options to ensure the continued cost effective operation of the Scheme for the benefit of farms and protection of the environment.
Today we have signed an agreement with Cynar plc which will use technical innovation to convert waste farm plastics to a usable liquid fuel suitable for use in a range of applications, including motor vehicles. Furthermore, the securing of an additional safe and sustainable outlet for the waste material collected from farms will help underpin the continued economic viability of the Scheme.”
Mr. Slattery said: “Since it started its operations in 1998, the Scheme has collected and recycled over 43,000 tonnes of used silage sheeting and bale wrap. In 2004, the Scheme collected 11,000 tonnes from farms, recycling 9,000 tonnes, surpassing its Government target by 1,000 tonnes. 55,000 farmers used the service in 2004 to have their waste silage sheeting and wrap collected. It continues to be the most successful waste farm plastics recycling scheme Europe.”
Mr. Slattery also highlighted the fact that IFFPG Ltd. have announced a feasibility study and pilot scheme into the collection of other waste materials on farms. He said: “We are examining how best to extend the collection service to other waste streams on farms, including fertiliser bags and used chemical containers. This is important to support farmers in meeting higher environmental demands, and the specific requirements of schemes such as the Rural Environmental Protection Scheme.”
